Embrace the Amazing is a concert and art showcase geared toward creating widespread education and awareness of autism. The main focal points will be as follows:
1. Education of characteristics to identify a child/person with autism
2. Education of the spectrum of autism
3. Education of services that can be provided for a child/person with autism.
The thought behind Embrace the Amazing came from my own personal experiences having a child on the autism spectrum. My niece was diagnosed with autism and my brother-in-law was able independently to navigate throughout the Lansing public school system, and receive the necessary services and diagnosis. Our situation was slightly different with the Detroit public school system. My daughter was educationally diagnosed with autism. However, she was not medically diagnosed because we could not find a specialist that accepted our insurance. We were able to receive certain some services but not all that she needed within the school. My wife’s perseverance, and our struggle with getting the services that our daughter Isabelle needs inspired me to put this event together. My thought is that if we can educate people on how to navigate the system and provide resources than their children will benefit and it will lessen the stress of parenting, while enhancing the understanding of how to deal with the communication of an autistic child. Through my experience and my wife’s struggle I want to give back and help others not to struggle as we have.
Costs: This event will be free, but we will love for people to donate in order to help raise money for the organizations associated with this even to raise awareness and provide resources.
