Sometimes, the best first aid is YOU. Take the course, save a life, strengthen your community!

You are more likely to encounter someone – friend, family member, coworker, neighbor, or member of the community – in an emotional crisis than someone having a heart attack.

Similar in concept to traditional First Aid and CPR, the groundbreaking Mental Health First Aid is help provided to a person developing a mental health problem or experiencing a crisis until professional treatment is obtained or the crisis resolves.

Mental Health First Aid is a 16-hour training certification course which teaches a 5-step action plan to offer help to others in crisis. Anyone can take the Mental Health First Aid course – first responders, students, teachers, leaders of faith communities, human resources professionals, law enforcement personnel, social workers, employers, advocacy organizations, and caring citizens. Eight hours are focused on adults and eight hours are focused on youth.

What Happens In Class?

If you take the class, you will learn how to apply the five-step strategy in situations such as helping someone through a panic attack, engaging with someone who may be suicidal or assisting an individual who has overdosed. You’ll practice the intervention strategies rather than to just learn about them. This simple experience can make it easier to actually apply the knowledge in a real-life situation.

You will not learn to diagnose, nor how to provide any therapy or counseling – rather, you will gain concrete tools and answers to key questions like “What can I do?” and “Where can someone find help?”

Northern Lakes Community Mental Health is certified to provide Mental Health First Aid program to northern Michigan – now with up to 16 continuing education credits available through the Michigan Social Work Continuing Education Collaborative – and including the new youth component.

Mental Health First Aid training is offered over two consecutive days. You may choose to attend only the first day (focusing on adults), or the second day (focusing on youth), or both days

We may also be able to provide a training at your organization if you have a full group. Contact Beth Burke at (231) 876-3249 to inquire about availability.
