The Free Legal Aid Clinic is a student-run, 501(c)(3) nonprofit, legal aid organization established by Wayne Law students in 1965. For more than 50 years, we have provided Wayne County’s elderly and indigent populations with quality legal representation. In this time, the organization also has provided countless Wayne Law students with a unique learning experience. At the Free Legal Aid Clinic, student attorneys are given their own cases and clients. While students work under the supervision of experienced legal aid attorneys from Lakeshore Legal Aid and the Elder Law and Advocacy Center, students are responsible for both their clients and cases. Student attorneys get the opportunity to represent their clients in court under the Michigan student practice rule. Students have had the opportunity to argue motions, present settlement agreements and first chair full bench trials, gaining valuable litigation skills. Students are assigned to handle cases in both elder and family law. Elder law cases cover a wide range of issues from estate planning to landlord/tenant disputes. When handling family law cases our students assist indigent clients with divorces, custody matters and other issues. Oftentimes, clients are survivors of domestic violence. As one Wayne County family law judge said, operating in this field means we see “the best people at their worst,” but we have a unique opportunity […]

Founded in 1868, the Wayne State University School of Medicine educates more than 1,000 medical students in all four classes. In addition to undergraduate medical education, the school offers master’s degree, Ph.D. and M.D.-Ph.D. programs in 14 areas of basic science to about 400 students annually. The school’s ties to the community are strong. As the only medical school in Detroit, WSU has a stated mission to improve the overall health of the community. As part of this mission, the school has established, with the help of a $6 million National Institutes of Health grant, the Center for Urban and African-American Health to seek new ways to redress health disparities by identifying preventive strategies and therapeutic approaches to chronic diseases that affect this population, namely obesity, cardiovascular disease and cancer. Perhaps the most significant contribution the school provides to the community is care to area residents who are under- or uninsured. Along with the Detroit Medical Center, WSU faculty physicians provide an average of $150 million in uncompensated care annually.
It is the mission of Wayne Center, which recognizes the dignity of each individual, to be the leading agency in Wayne County in assisting and enabling persons with disabling conditions of other behavioral health care needs to achieve optimal independence and inclusion in the community through self-determination.

Detroit Mercy Law is proud of its clinical program, one of a small number of required clinical programs in the country. Founded initially as the Urban Law Clinic in 1965, it was among the earliest clinics in the nation. Since that time, the program has flourished receiving numerous awards including the ABA Louis M. Brown Award for Legal Access with Meritorious Recognition in 2012, and the ABA Law Student Division’s Judy M. Weightman Memorial Public Interest Award in 2006. There are currently nine clinics with two new clinics to begin in Winter 2018. The required clinical program is evidence of Detroit Mercy Law’s mission to provide an educational experience that emphasizes experiential learning and service to others. Students attend weekly classes that focus on relevant practical skills and the substantive law. Students must also complete a substantial number of clinical work hours outside the classroom. Clinical professors work with students throughout the semester to discuss case strategy, review student work and evaluate the overall performance of students. Traverse Area Community Sailing
Adaptive Sailing ProgramIn the summer of 2009 TACS introduced an adaptive sailing program. Adaptive sailing is a program that is inclusive to individuals with all abilities, including but not limited to those with physicals and/or cognitive delays, senior citizens, veterans, and those with critical health concerns. Easy access is the key to providing services for all, and the Cornwell Sailing Center provides barrier free docks, lifts and equipment. Community funding and collaboration has been necessary to provide the boats, instruction, and volunteers to run a safe and fun program. Currently we have six Access boats (two 303’s and four 2.3’s). These boats were selected because of their stability and maneuverability. A joystick is used for steerage, the centerboard is very heavy and the sail area is limited. Weight of an unrigged boat is about 130 lbs. Click here to learn more about the 2.3s. Site adaptations have been carefully assessed. Curbs, floors, dock grades, lifts, light switches, garage door openers, and transfer stations have been considered and designed to promote independent participation. Accommodations, as needed, are also made for students using our regular fleet of boats, and individualized instruction. (See Up North 2 program alert: “TACS: adaptive sailing program”) Scholarships may be provided to […]
