Camp Goals

The goal of Camp Fish Tales is to promote an atmosphere for the physically challenged individual to meet and make new friends while participating in group growth activities. In many cases campers will learn to deal with own emotional and physical limitations. Camp Fish Tales will provide campers with the opportunity to be away from home and become more aware of the need for their caregiver to have a “break”. Campers will become more attuned tothe needs of others within their units. Campers are encouraged to participate in as many activities as possible.

Activities

Campers rise early to wash up and dress for breakfast.  Some can do these activities alone, others require assistance from a counselor.  We set aside enough time in the morning so that campers can do as much of their own personal care as possible.  Campers meet for breakfast at 8:30 in the dining room.  Breakfast is followed by an hour of open time where campers and counselors tidy up their cabin, socialize and make plans for the day’s events.  Most of our campers have to follow someone else’s time table or schedule, due to their dependence for help.  At the camp, they are given the freedom to make decisions on what they do and have time to socialize at their leisure.  Many of our adult campers do not have the opportunity to socialize with peers on a daily basis.

At 10:00 a.m. the campers gather for flag raising, which signals the start of morning activities.  Organized team games, like scavenger hunts or modified hockey and bucket ball games are a wonderful opportunity for campers to work and play together.

Lunch is at 12:30 and is followed by an hour of rest period.  The remainder of the afternoon is spent on individual activities such as arts and crafts (we now offer pottery, thanks to a grant from the youth initiative fund), archery, paint ball target practice, bowling, swimming, boating, fishing, and trail exploring.

At 5:30 p.m. campers come together in the main lodge for dinner.  Evening activities include gathering around the campfire for storytelling, skits and songs.  A dance is held weekly on the patio off the main lodge, along with a talent show night. By 10:00 p.m. everyone heads back to their cabin for a good night’s rest and another full day.

Staffing

Camp Fish Tales is licensed by the State of Michigan and is staffed by a camp director, cook, office manager, licensed medical director, medical volunteers, counselors, counselors in training, lifeguard and program assistant.

We now have eleven sessions of camp scheduled for summer 2020. For many of our campers, this is one of the few opportunities to become more independent and to build social skills. For caregivers, Camp Fish Tales offers respite, a chance to renew, or even a chance to focus on other family members. Our campers have a physical and/or developmental disability. Before accepting a camper, we make sure that we can adequately meet their needs. Due to our high staffing ratio and 24-hour nursing staff, Camp Fish Tales is known for taking campers with more severe disabilities. It is often difficult for these families to find an overnight recreational activity that can assist their loved ones, due to their disabilities.
