The Great Lakes Bay Area Collaborative Network, consisting of school district educators, ABA providers, Community Mental Health, and local pediatricians, are collaboratively offering information and training to improve the lives of individuals with autism and the family/community who support them. The intended audience for this training series are parents, extended family members, caregivers, community members, educators, outside agency providers, and any others interested in learning more about autism spectrum disorders. The following sessions will be offered this school year.
Meet the Team – Learn more about the team members involved with diagnosing and determining school eligibility for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), including the professionals that provide services to the individuals after the diagnosis/eligibility in the clinical and/or school settings.

Sexual Health for Persons with Disabilities – Learn and discuss practical information on issues ranging from puberty & development, sex education programs, relationships, and maintaining sexual boundaries. This session is appropriate for parents, educators, service providers, family members, and individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder and other disabilities.

Self-Management – Learn how to increase independence with the use of selfmanagement systems for individuals with ASD. This will include the steps needed for a student to learn to discriminate between appropriate and inappropriate behaviors, monitor and record their own behaviors, and reward themselves for meeting a specified goal.

Autism Alliance of Michigan/Family Matters – Autism Alliance of Michigan are leading collaborative efforts across the state that will improve the quality of life for individuals with autism through education, access to comprehensive services, community awareness, inclusion efforts, and coordinated advocacy. They will be sharing resources and information about sleep and eating concerns that are common for individuals with Autism and their caregivers. Family Matters provides parents with information about special education and other resources.

The Neurology of Autism – This presentation will provide participants with current research related to how autism impacts many of the brain structures. Participants will leave with the understanding of how the brain difference creates strengths and talents, as well as some challenges associated with an autism spectrum disorder.

Transition to School – Teams will meet to discuss the transition into the school system from preschool and Early Intensive Behavior Intervention, using data collection, transition checklists, and building a collaborative team to support the child and family.
